Barnibyke is the original recumbent bicycle manufacturing venture I started in 1985. It was born of my inability to buy a recumbent bicycle that met my requirements: It had to handle well, safely, efficiently, and be comfortable. Barnibykes precipitated the shift from "State of the Art" to "Creation of the Art" and remain today, in my less than humble opinion, one of the best single rider recumbent designs available. The underlying principle is keeping everything simple. The basic design is short wheel base (see article here) (SWB) with under seat steering (USS). It uses a 20 inch front wheel, and a 27", 700", or 24" rear, depending upon the model. That design has been updated but not yet subjected to all testing. The new design adds front and rear suspension, hydraulic disk brakes, enhanced safety features, fairings, tandem potential and electric assist. The new recumbent continues with the modular theme of the Barnibyke line.

The Barnibyke is the heart of the system of several terraquatic human powered vehicles I have designed, built and raced. Those systems include "Pope Garlic Tofu's Alligator Express" and "ALEG8R".

One of the things that happened on my path to recumbent-dom was that I met Bill Graham, coming out of the back of a Grateful Dead concert, while I was riding my bike. He was surprised and asked if it was easy to ride. I jumped off, told him how to position his foot for takeoff power, and ran next to him for about 30 seconds till he had it down. I had met him several times in my life, all at Dead shows. At one concert he told a story about "This is IT" which I later selected as my first domain. THISisIT.com is now a subsidiary of the Macy's group.
